How the comparison works

You enter a budget and two countries. We convert the budget at a dated reference rate and show what it buys in each country, from real local shop prices.

How do I compare two countries?

  1. Type your budget and choose its currency.
  2. Pick two countries. Only countries with real price data are offered.
  3. We convert the budget into each local currency at a dated reference rate.
  4. You see the result two ways, side by side, with the price date and the limits stated on the page.

What does the product-by-product view show?

For every product sold in a comparable form in both countries, you see the local price, the pack sizes we found and how much of it US$100 buys in each country. The US$100 reference is the same for every visitor.

An exact match is the same product and pack size in both countries. Comparable means the same kind of product, such as UHT milk or sunflower oil, with a different brand or pack size. Staples that differ by country, like jasmine, white and basmati rice, are never treated as one product. If a match is not clearly fair, we leave it out.

How is each country's basket built?

Each basket uses the country's own prices and the same rules. Every product starts with one standard purchase: one pack, or half a kilo for things sold by weight. The rest of the budget goes, step by step, to the product with the fewest purchases so far, and no category may take more than a set share. Larger budgets bring in more categories, wherever we have real prices.

The two baskets can hold different products, because shops in each country sell different things. That is why basket totals do not rank countries. Each basket shows its contents, its total, the share of the budget used and what is left.

What does the site not do?

  • It does not sell anything, link to shops or show shop, supplier or brand names.
  • It does not guess how many people a budget feeds or how long it lasts.
  • It never estimates a missing price. A product without a usable price is left out, and the page says so.

Which dates and rates are used?

The prices on the site were read on 8 November 2026. Exchange rates are the European Central Bank's reference rates of 6 November 2026. For the UAE dirham we use the Central Bank of the UAE's published rate of 3.6725 per US dollar. For the Georgian lari and the Vietnamese dong we use the National Bank of Georgia's and Vietcombank's euro rates.
